Pottery Painting for Anxiety
Check out the video above for more details!
When I create, my mind shifts away from my daily worries, and my focus shifts to what I am creating. From watercoloring to adult coloring books, I wanted to try a new form of art to calm my mind. So I went to a local pottery studio called “Create It” in Sebastopol, CA with one of my dearest friends. Because I was doing this to relax, I thought - why not paint something that will help relax me. So I picked a votive candle holder, and chose to do solid colors because I wanted to do something simple.
While I was painting, I focused on just painting the inside a solid yellow, and the outside a solid blue… and that’s it! When my friend and I weren’t talking or laughing about old stories, my mind started to zen out, and I forgot about all of my previous thoughts and worries. In fact, I got so “zenned out” that at one point I started putting yellow in the blue section without even realizing it. Now, I am usually a perfectionist, but my intent with painting was to just create and relax my mind, so I didn’t care that I messed up a few times.
Once I got my piece back from the studio, I was actually pretty proud of what I created. I was fine with the areas I smudged the two colors in because I had a cool new candle holder that I can light a candle in every night before bed!
If you have never done pottery painting before, I highly recommend it! Studios can have anything from plates, to piggy banks, to cute figurines to paint. I also recommend bringing a friend, your partner, and/or your kids for some more fun. It can be a great bonding experience!
