How To Change My Reality

The dream you are living is your creation. It is your perception of reality that you can change at any time. You have the power to create hell and you have to power to create heaven.
— Don Miguel Ruiz

I’m not gonna lie, I used to think this idea wasn’t true. I thought I couldn’t be happy unless good things were happening to me. But really, shitty things happen all of the time. The only control I have is my perception of them.

In one day I could get a flat tire, lose my wallet, stain my favorite shirt, etc. If I look at these things as “bad”, I might start to think I just have bad luck. And then whenever anything bad happens, I’ll start to tell myself: “Great, just my luck.” These thoughts create an endless negative mindset that won’t do me any good.

Instead, I need to adopt a positive mindset. To do this, I mainly just need to make everything not such a big deal. I need to have less charge towards the situation. If my tire gets flat, I lose my wallet and stain my favorite shirt, I have to find something that could be potentially positive in those situations. For instance, if I get a flat tire, maybe I’ll meet someone waiting at the tire shop who may hire me for a great job in the future. If I lose my wallet, maybe while I’m looking for it, I’ll find money on the ground, or stumble upon a new exercise studio that I never thought I’d try. The key is to stay open; open to opportunities.

I used to have suuuuch a negative mindset, so this took me a while, but it’s something I work at every single day.

How did I stay on track to adopt a better mindset?

Podcasts, self-help books, yoga, exercise, meditation, TED Talks, friends, family, nature, etc. I incorporate at least one of these things every single day. I take bits and pieces from each and form a mindset that works best for me and my well-being.

Now, occasionally I’ll slip and become “Negative Nancy” again, but the more I integrate this mindset, the shorter lived my negative mindset remains.

How do you maintain a positive mindset?
